Instead, take a logical, detailed approach to setting your goals. There’s a system for goal setting known as SMART goals. 

SMART goals are a system for determining what you want to achieve, what is attainable, and how you can make it happen. 

SMART goals can be defined as:

Specific: Your goals should be clear and specific, defining the “who,” “what,” “when,” “where,” “why,” and “how.”

For example, simply stating that you want to increase your sales should be more specific. 

Instead, make it specific, such as stating that you want to increase sales by 10% next month.   

Measurable: Your goal should be something you can measure. 

In the example above, simply saying you want to increase sales isn’t enough. 

Having a measurable goal, such as increasing sales by 10% in a month, is much easier to track and determine its effectiveness. 

Achievable: Dreaming big and having lofty goals is fine, but they may be less feasible, especially in the short term. 

Setting SMART goals includes considering short-term wins to build momentum and avoid frustration. 

For example, instead of saying you want to double sales in one month, a more achievable goal is to set a smaller percentage that is easier to accomplish, like increasing sales growth by 10% over three months. 

The goal here is to set smaller, winnable goals that motivate you to act in that same direction. 

The benefit of smaller, achievable goals also means that if you fall short, you can refine and change course without investing too much time and other resources. 

Relevant: Your goals should be appropriate and align with your larger priorities and objectives and with what you’re trying to do right now. 

Think about your goals in a way that makes sense for you to devote your time to them right now, and consider how they act as a building block to help you move toward your success. 

An example would be planning. 

If your focus is on growing long-term sustainability, your goal should be increasing customer retention rates by X over the next 90 days, then adjusting and repeating after another 90 days. 

Time-bound: Without accountability and deadlines, things fall by the wayside. It’s simply human nature that we accomplish more when we have a sense of urgency.

So, set a deadline so that you can start prioritizing your resources and time for the tasks at hand.

If you’re trying to grow by 10% over 90 days, that’s a good start, but add a more relevant timeline. Instead of saying 10% growth over 90 days, give it some teeth, reverse engineer your growth goals, and build a more detailed timeline. 

For example, take 90 days and determine how many new customers you’d need every week to achieve your 10% growth. Set your amount—perhaps one new customer a week—and have that goal every week until the 90 days are up. 

Having definable goals allows you to assess the effectiveness of your growth efforts and provides valuable insights into how you’re using your resources. 

Think of your goal setting like a marathon. 

If you focus on the distance, it can seem insurmountable. But if you do the training and focus on certain milestones or even just one foot forward at a time, you’ll find it easier to make the long haul more achievable. 

So, step one in growing and scaling your business is to build a strong foundation based on setting SMART goals.

Step 2: Master Strategies For Customer Growth

Any knowledge business’s lifeblood is connecting with customers to increase revenue opportunities.

These types of ads work because they can put your site in front of people who are searching for the phrase you included, but once you stop running your ad, that traffic can disappear. 

Also, these ads can become very expensive, so it’s a good idea to research and set a budget before you begin. 

Social Media Ads: As opposed to PPC ads that appear as a result of a search engine query, social media ads are those on social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others. 

The good thing about social media ads is that they don’t cost as much as PPC ads, you can make them very niche-specific and highly targeted, and they are more engaging than a text box at the end of an online search.

You can use a few hacks to become proficient in these efforts, including outsourcing your content creation and publication to third parties like freelance copywriters, videographers, graphic designers, and more. 

Blog posts, YouTube and other video content, and webinars are great ways to use content to build trust in your brand and drive long-term organic traffic growth that helps find and nurture leads.  

Affiliate and Influencer Marketing: A very cost-efficient way to grow your brand, making it an extremely scalable option, is to create affiliate programs and connect with influencers to drive traffic and promote your products. 

Affiliate marketing includes creating a product others promote for you in exchange for a commission. 

Think of it as having an outsourced sales team promote your products to their audiences.

This is one area that people sometimes forget and find themselves trying to dig out of a hole. You want to have enough resources in reserve that they can carry you while you’re trying to build your business.

To figure this out, look for trends, analyze your competitors, and look for weaknesses or areas they’re not addressing. These could be potential opportunities for you to position yourself as an expert and one that has a solution that the audience needs. 

When researching your target audience and the areas where you could service them, you can look at Google Trends, AnswerThePublic, and niche-related community forums and engage with others on social media.

  • Consideration Stage: At this stage, your target audience and potential customers know about your product but aren’t sure if it’s what they’re looking for.

One thing I’ve noticed over the years of working with entrepreneurs is that there’s a belief that things need to be hard to be good. 

Entrepreneurs of all levels tend to overthink this and overlook what’s right before them–using what they already know to help others. This limiting, false belief only makes things more confusing and overwhelming. 

Because of this false belief, entrepreneurs make online courses they think their audience wants, only to see them fall short of their goals. 

To create a successful online course, focus on your knowledge and expertise and consider how it could benefit others. 

You should use your expertise to inform and educate your audience, which helps them overcome a challenge. 

Yes, if you have any subject knowledge, you’re an expert to those who don’t know as much as you do. 

You may not be the ultimate expert on your topic, but depending on your audience, you may have a level of expertise they lack, making you enough of an expert to help them.

So, emphasize what you already know. 

That’s because the most successful online courses are authentic and bring genuine value to the participants. 

Being passionate and knowledgeable about a topic is obvious to readers, so before you create your course, think about the projects you’ve been a part of and the classes you’ve taken that impacted you. 

What were some of the core insights you took away from those courses? 

Is there a common thread in people asking about your expertise and topic? 

Again, you’re looking to use what you already know to create content that helps your audience. 

If people constantly ask you about something, when you use your knowledge, experience, and understanding, this can be the foundation of your online course. 

For example, if you’re a digital marketer or a coach working in personal development, you can use your expertise to craft content that can help people looking for answers to their problems. 

Whatever it is, you have a level of knowledge that others don’t, so you want to package what you know in a way that your audience can understand and will create an impact that helps them. 

Step 4: Understanding Your Audience’s Pain

When strategizing your online course, focus on how you’ll help your participants and make that foundational to your course. 

In other words, who are you creating this course for? 

Why are you looking to provide them with a course? 

One way to better understand your audience’s needs is to consider their pain points and what makes them tick. 

Get specific about their challenges, wants, and goals to craft the course around those solutions, which will help you create and deliver a transforming product. 

To better understand what keeps your potential customers up at night, conduct research by engaging with them, using online surveys, social media polls, and even one-on-one calls to gain insights and validate your ideas. 

Step 5: Mapping Out Your Course Curriculum

Mapping out your course will help you stay on task and give serious weight to your topic and course. 

One of the best strategies for making your content coherent and flow well from start to finish is to map out your content from the end first. 

Let me say that in a different way. Focus your course curriculum on the outcome objectives and work backward to outline each module, easily guiding your students to the outcome you want them to achieve. 

As you have a progression in mind, focus every section or module with the necessary steps to lead your students forward. 

Make each section actionable and clear about the outcome. 

Simple is the best strategy here. 

Step 6: Select The Format

Whether you’re designing your course around live events, pre-recorded modules, or interactive sessions, select the format that best suits the content and your audience.

For example, a self-paced course may be the best format for busy working professionals. At the same time, a live interactive event may be best for individuals who want hands-on, real-time education.  

Of course, a suggestion is to consider that if you do a live event, record it so you can bundle it as either a future course or an add-on feature you can repurpose as an upsell. 

Another consideration is matching the format with how your audience would prefer to consume the content. 

When you’re testing your ideas, gain insights into your audience’s preferences by engaging with them on social media platforms, conducting polls and surveys, or even having one-on-one conversations to see what type of format they’d prefer.  

Step 7: Pick The Right Platform And Tools

Much like choosing the right format, selecting the right platform can set the stage for your course and impact your participants’ learning experience. So, choose a platform that balances customization and user experience.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen people make when creating content is going off the cuff and winging it, making it seem less professional and polished. 

If you want to be perceived as an expert, you must present your content professionally. 

While it may be easier just to wing it, your course should have a clear, logical progression. 

For example, outlining and scripting your videos will help you stay on track with your messaging, and a detailed, careful edit will give them an appealing, polished finish. 

Keep in mind that people don’t want to be taught a bunch of information; they want an experience. Make your course entertaining, engaging, and exciting to keep your students involved. 

Consider your videos as a way to interact with your audience and bring your content to life. 

Add Supporting Resources

While video may be central to your course content, providing supporting resources can deepen the learning opportunity. 

Including things like PDFs, worksheets, and case studies can add value to your course, while quizzes and section exams can give your members reference points to understand what they’ve learned so far. 

Include Calls To Action

Another way to engage your students is to include calls to action (CTAs).

CTAs are great for getting your members to act on their learning. 

Your CTAs could ask them to simply reflect on what they’ve learned, complete a worksheet, or complete another task that provides a way to stay active and engaged so that the content sticks with them. 

Step 9: Pricing Your Course

Next, when creating a successful online course, consider the price and what your audience is willing to pay for the information you’re providing. 

To better understand the value of your course, you should research similar courses to the one you’re designing. 

Is their topic similar to what you’re planning? 

Do they provide the same number of modules in the same format? 

What value does a participant get at the price point, and how does it compare to what you provide?  

If so, what are you looking to provide that is different and unique? Identifying the similarities and differences in content will help you consider how to price your course. 

After comparing similar courses, my second question is whether the price point aligns with your content and audience. 

While a high-quality course can demand premium pricing, it has to match what your target audience is willing to pay. 

In other words, the price of your course depends on what your audience perceives its value to be. 

If you’re unsure about your ideal price point after research, one option to consider is offering it as a tiered option. 

You could offer your course as a standard option at one price and a premium course with exclusive benefits such as additional materials, live one-on-one coaching, and other bonus materials. 

Choose Various Payment Options

Okay, you’ve researched the prices of similar courses and considered what your audience will support. 

The next step is to consider offering various payment options, whether a one-time payment, an installment option, tiered pricing, or a subscription model. 

Allowing participants to make a single, one-time payment or offering to allow for a payment installment will give your offer more flexibility and open it up to a wider range of potential members. 

Another option is to include tiered pricing for students who may want more than the base course.

Or if someone was getting married. They’d have a plan to handle all the details of the location, who is there, the food, dress and tux, honeymoon, etc. All the things. 

The same for you, your personal growth and business growth. 

What’s your plan for reaching your goals?

I know you have big dreams. And maybe you’re already well on your way to the success you want. Or maybe you’re just getting started.

Usually, we are our own worst enemy when it comes to growing. 

Human beings tend to make a bunch of progress on something, and then we crave the comfortable. 

We fall into a routine.

Because a workout plan keeps you focused. It gives you an exact list of things to do, and then you just work the plan.

Let me give you just one simple example of this…

50 Books a Year

Let’s say you want to read 50 books in 2025. Maybe you look back on the last year or two and you realize you’re not taking in as much new business info as you’d like. You know you need to read a lot more books on entrepreneurship to grow faster. Benjamin Franklin said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” True!

And you don’t want to just listen to an audiobook on your way to the next business meeting while you’re stuck in traffic.

You want to get some actual big-time reading done!

Without a plan, you’d just end up reading a couple of books here and there and end your year having read only a handful. Maybe when you had extra time during the holidays or something. 

But with a plan in place, you can hit these goals. You’ll break down how many books you want to read this year (50). How many books you need to actually finish every week (basically one per week). Then you can see right away how much reading you’ll need to do. 

Maybe one hour in the morning or at night before bed will be enough to accomplish this. Maybe you’ll need to do a bit more, or spend certain weeks that are slower reading extra. Maybe you listen to 20 audiobooks and then the rest in hardcopy.  

Do you see now how this plan will automatically show you if you’re on or off track to your goal?

That’s the power of having a plan! 

And it gets even more exciting when you create a plan for every area of your personal development that you want to level up.

Maybe it’s more socializing or networking. 

Maybe it’s more time with your family, partner or kids.

Have you ever wondered why your incredible product isn’t flying off the shelves despite the praise and positive comments you receive online? You know your product can transform lives, yet it feels like you’re shouting into the void. You might get comments like “This is great!!” or “I’m so inspired” or “You are amazing,” but these aren’t converting into sales. If Instagram comments were currency, you’d be rolling in wealth, but they’re not. 

The reason your content isn’t converting is more simple than you might think: it’s not connecting to the RIGHT person

The key to making more sales—and therefore making more impact—is creating content that genuinely connects with the version of your client who needs your product as the solution. 

Before I go into how to shift this, try not to get frustrated. The fact that people are resonating with you means there are people out there who want and agree with what you’re sharing and that’s GREAT news!

The Trap: Speaking to the Wrong Version of Your Ideal Client

But here’s the trap so many people fall into: they speak to the wrong version of their ideal client. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of positive feedback and assume that every enthusiastic comment means you’re on the right track. However, the people leaving these comments might not be the ones who are ready to take action and purchase your product.

Here’s what often happens:

  1. Misalignment in the Customer Journey: You might be addressing people who are still in the early stages of their journey—those who are curious and interested but not yet ready to commit to a solution. They love your content, but they’re not experiencing the acute pain that your product solves.
  2. Broad Messaging: Your messaging might be too broad, trying to appeal to everyone instead of honing in on the specific needs of the clients who are ready to buy. When you try to speak to everyone, you end up resonating with no one.
  3. Lack of Urgency: The version of your ideal client you’re currently attracting might not feel the urgency to solve their problem. They like what you have to say, but they don’t feel compelled to act right now.
  4. Surface-Level Engagement: Engaging content is great, but if it doesn’t delve into the deeper pain points and challenges your ideal client faces, it won’t drive them to make a purchase. They enjoy your posts, but they don’t see your product as a necessary solution to their problems.

To avoid this trap, you need to focus on speaking to the version of your ideal client who is actively seeking a solution to their problem and ready to take action. 

The 2mm Shift: How to Magnetize Your Messaging

You’re closer to nailing your messaging than you might think. Sometimes, all it takes is a tiny adjustment—a 2mm shift—to connect deeply with your ideal clients. 

The secret to magnetic messaging lies in meeting your ideal client exactly where they are in their journey, at the precise moment when they can’t see the solution, and then presenting yourself as the answer they’ve been searching for. This slight shift in perspective can make all the difference, turning your efforts into powerful, compelling messages that resonate deeply and make your audience go from “you are so inspiring” to “I need this!”

So, how do you do this? Here’s a simple framework:

1. Identify the Pain Point

First, get crystal clear on the pain point your ideal client is experiencing right now. What keeps them up at night? What are their struggles, fears, and frustrations?

2. Understand Their Journey

Map out the journey your ideal client is on. Where do they start? What are the key milestones and challenges they face along the way? Most importantly, identify the point where they are stuck and desperately seeking a solution.

3. Craft Your Message to Address the Pain

Your message should speak directly to the pain and challenges your ideal client is currently facing. Use their language, their emotions, and their experiences to connect with them on a deep level.

4. Position Yourself as the Solution

Once you’ve connected with their pain, position yourself and your product as the solution. Show them how you can help them overcome their current struggles and achieve the transformation they desire.

5. Highlight the Transformation

Paint a vivid picture of what life will look like after they use your product or service. Show them the benefits, the results, and the positive changes they can expect.

6. Test and Refine

Finally, continually test and refine your messaging. Pay attention to the feedback you receive and be willing to make adjustments to ensure your message remains relevant and compelling.

Examples in Action: Business Coach

Let’s put this framework into action with an example. Suppose you’re a business coach helping new entrepreneurs. Instead of speaking to those who have already built successful businesses, focus on those who are struggling to get their first clients.

Identify the Pain Point: They’re overwhelmed and unsure how to attract their first clients.

Understand Their Journey: They’ve just started their business, tried a few marketing strategies, but nothing seems to work.

Craft Your Message: “Are you tired of trying every marketing trick in the book and still hearing crickets? I understand how frustrating it is to put in the effort and not see results.”

Position Yourself as the Solution: “I help new entrepreneurs like you attract your first clients with proven strategies that work.”

Highlight the Transformation: “Imagine having a steady stream of clients eager to work with you and watching your business grow.”

Test and Refine: Gather feedback, analyze results, and tweak your message to better resonate with your audience.

Example in Action: Language Teacher

Let’s put this framework into action with another example. Suppose you’re a language teacher with a course on becoming fluent in a new language. Instead of speaking to those who are already somewhat fluent, focus on those who are struggling to learn and feel stuck in their progress.

Identify the Pain Point: They’re frustrated by their slow progress and lack of fluency despite numerous attempts to learn the language.

Understand Their Journey: They’ve tried using language apps, attending classes, and practicing on their own, but they still can’t hold a conversation confidently.

Craft Your Message: “Are you frustrated with your slow progress in learning a new language? I understand how hard it can be to master a language despite putting in the effort.”

Position Yourself as the Solution: “I help learners like you become fluent in a new language with immersive and effective teaching methods.”

Highlight the Transformation: “Imagine confidently speaking a new language and connecting with people from different cultures. Picture yourself traveling with ease, enjoying new experiences, and making meaningful connections.”

Test and Refine: Gather feedback from your students, analyze their progress and success stories, and tweak your message to better resonate with those who are currently struggling to learn a new language.

Conclusion

Making your messaging magnetic isn’t about changing your product—it’s about changing who you’re speaking to. By meeting your ideal client where they are in their journey and showing up as the solution to their current struggles, you can create powerful, compelling messages that resonate deeply and drive sales.

Remember, it’s often a 2mm shift that makes the biggest difference. 

Identify the pain, understand the journey, and position yourself as the solution. When you do this, your messaging will become magnetic, drawing in the clients who need you most and making those sales you know you deserve.
